EMA press release for April meeting of the CVMP

The EMA has posted the press release with details of the CVMP's meeting of 8 - 10 April 2015 (Link). General news relating to regulatory affairs includes:

  • A referral procedure was concluded regarding the risk to consumers of the use of lidocaine and xylazine in horses and other food producing species. The committee concluded that the use of either active substance represented a negligible risk to consumers.
  • The Committee initiated a new discussion on reducing the need to use antimicrobials in animal husbandry. This discussion forms part of the ongoing response to the European Commission's request for scientific opinion on antimicrobial usage in animals (Link).
  • A draft recommendation on pharmacovigilance surveillance and signal detection for VMPs was adopted, following the close of public consultation. The recommendation and an overview of comments will be published by the EMA following adoption by the HMA.
